Cannabidiol (CBD), which is a compound that is extracted from cannabis or hemp, has managed to achieve a lot of attention recently because of the huge medicinal value it has. How CBD Works For Seizures?
The main cause of the seizures is the erratic electrical activity in the brain which may spread and result in uncontrolled physical movements along with alterations of consciousness. Anti-seizure drugs that are commonly prescribed works by reducing the excitatory nerve activity in your brain.
However, these drugs may not be effective for Dravet syndrome and LGS. In addition to these, it might need more than one anti-seizure drugs for effectively controlling these seizures.
But now, CBD is found to be effective for controlling these seizures in an efficient way. How CBD works for curing these conditions still remains unclear, but it is believed that this compound can have a range of Biochemical effects on your nerve cells that can have an impact on seizures. Even though research is going on in this field, it is still in its infancy.
Epidiolex usually comes in the form of an oral solution and the dose for each person is decided based on his/her weight. This medicine is commonly started at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg twice a day and the dosage will be increased eventually. The dosage can be increased to a range of 20 mg/kg per day based on the requirement. But the side effects can also increase with the increase in dosage. Medications used for controlling seizures should be taken on a regular basis without skipping or combining doses.
Along with the enormous number of uses of CBD oil, this compound can also have some side effects. The common side effects caused by CBD when it is used in the anti-seizure medications include:
