Cannabigerol is a cannabinoid which has not been given much attention until recently. It is present in very small quantity in all strains of cannabis and other plants rich in cannabinoids. In fact, it is present in as less as 1 percent in cannabis plants which makes it difficult for its properties to be felt. Another reason why CBG was never noticed before was due to its structure which is very similar to the main cannabis compound, THC. Its low concentration and psychoactivity also helped THC overshadow the compound.

The Story Of CBG

In the early stages of its life, cannabis plants will not have CBG in it. They have cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), which is a precursor of CBG. Over time, this compound will be broken down into cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), cannabichromenic acid (CBCA), and tetrahydrocannbinolic acid (THCA). The percentage of these compounds are inter-related.

When exposed to UV light or heat, these three compounds breakdown into CBD, CBG and THC respectively. When the concentration of CBD is high, the amount of THC and CBG will be less. Similarly, when the concentration of THC is high, that of CBD and CBG will be low. Scientists are working to grow a strain that will contain more CBG. They are experimenting by crossing the strains and extracting CBG when its concentration is highest during the flowering cycle.

Researchers who compared CBD and CBG say that despite being cannabinoids, they are different. It was found that CBG reacts with the CB1 receptor of the endocannabinoid system, like THC. Due to this attribute of CBG, it inhibits the high that THC creates. So, if you were to smoke weed and then have CBG isolate, you would not get high.

CBG research has proved the above. CBG undoubtedly plays a vital role in the entourage effect where the cannabinoids increase the effect of CBD. This is a phenomenon observed in full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD extracts.

CBG Medical Benefits

Better Vision

Our eyes have a good number of endocannabinoid receptors and CBD can bind with them to improve vision, This is why those suffering from glaucoma used to get a medical marijuana card. Now, we know that CBG is a remarkable vasodilator which is even effective in reducing intraocular pressure.

Appetite Stimulant

This is another similarity between THC and CBG. Like THC, CBG can help patients undergoing chemotherapy by improving their appetite. CBG increases appetite and makes them eat frequently without producing any side effects. This guarantees that CBG will be effective for conditions like cachexia and other eating disorders.

If you are interested in reaping the benefits of CBG, you can find it in full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD oil.
